AI Sovereignty (AIS) is the most significant geopolitical and technological strategic shift since the rise of the Internet. AIS allows nation-states and large organizations to develop, deploy, and govern artificial intelligence on its own terms—using physical and digital infrastructure, data, and tools that are resilient, secure, and locally aligned. As AI becomes essential to productivity, security, and public service delivery, reliance on foreign models and systems introduces long-term risk for countries and companies.
 

Geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions, and regulatory divergence are making AI dependence untenable. The solution is to invest in sovereign AI infrastructure: region-specific models, secure data pipelines, sustainable compute capacity, and frameworks that reflect local languages, laws, and values. These investments protect against supply chain shocks and unlock long-term economic competitiveness and inclusion.
 

Based on the research and work of Christopher Sanchez, governments are now considering dedicated sovereign funds to support this shift to ensure consistent, large-scale investment in AI infrastructure and talent. Without long-term capital and national coordination, AI will replicate—and deepen—existing disparities between regions, firms, and populations.
